Looking after your tyres
There are many reasons for tyre fatigue other than use-age and age. Other factors include:
- Incorrect tyre pressures
- Incorrect wheel alignment (see our tracking section)
- Emergency braking
- Impact between the tyre and the kerb
- Potholes and poor road surfaces can also cause tyre damage
Correct tyre pressures are important for a number of reasons:
- The most important factor is safety. Underinflated tyres can overheat whilst overinflated tyres lead to poor road handling
- The second is economy. Under inflated tyres can lead to a 2.5% reduction in efficiency, the equivalent of throwing away 50p every time you refuel
- The third is the environment as correct tyre pressures help with fuel efficiency
Correct wheel alignment is important:
- Misalignment can cause many car handling problems and can potentially make the car unsafe
- Uneven tyre wear is often the result of worn or damaged suspension parts
Regular Visual Checks in at least three positions on the tyre* should include:
- tread depth (the legal limit for minimum tread depth in the is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the full circumference)
- tread condition
- sidewall condition
- signs of irregular wear
* Don't forget the spare

Wheel Alignment (Tracking)
Correct wheel alignments can significantly improve the life of your tyres whilst improving fuel efficiencies and help overcome steering problems.
This is an important element of car maintenance and is the process of ensuring that the angle and direction at which your wheels/tyres are set are optimum.
Ravenscroft use the latest 2 & 4 Wheel Laser Alignment equipment to accurately adjust the wheels to the specifications set out by the vehicle's manufacturer.
What to look out for...
Signs of potential problems with wheel alignment, which are often the result of worn or damaged suspension parts include:
- Misalignment can cause many car handling problems and can potentially make the car unsafe.
- Premature tyre wear
- Increase in braking distances
- Steering wheel vibration
- Vehicle pulls to one side
- Increased fuel consumption
What's included...
Using laser alignment technology and equipment, the Ravenscroft expert technicians will assess the primary alignment angles of your wheels.
All required adjustments will be made to ensure that your vehicle conforms to the manufacturer's specification.
A printed sheet will be provided for all 4 Wheel Alignments showing the before and after readings.
